The Plaka Band’s new CD "New Songs of Old Athens"

"New Songs of Old Athens" consists of new "traditional" Greek urban folk songs.  The lyrics were written by Notis Contoplianos’ late wife, Eleni Karapiperi.  Notis wrote all the music, plays guitar, and sings with his beautiful cello-like voice.  Kathy Sherman produced the album, plays bouzouki, baglamas and harmonica. The poetry is beautiful and all the music is very danceable.

Below is a brief biography of Eleni Karapiperi (Neni) who wrote all of the poetry and inspired the album.

Neni’s vision of life around her was acutely developed perhaps more so being born with a rare eye disorder. She began writing poetry in 1966, and adeptly captured the hardships, desires and triumphs of ordinary folk living in Athens.

Neni and Notis met in 1995, and married on March 1, 1996. Around 2000, life in Athens was in decline; their beloved city was decaying around them and the Greek economy was rapidly deteriorating. They decided it was time to leave behind family and friends and forge a new life together in California.

In February of 2010, Neni was diagnosed with lung cancer. Notis began setting Neni’s poetry to music while she was struggling through her battle with cancer. She finally succumbed to the disease in November, 2010. Rest in peace, Neni – this album is dedicated to your memory.
